Love at First Bite: How Iowans Are Celebrating This Valentine’s Day
This Valentine’s Day, couples in Ames are skipping last minute restaurants reservations in favor of immersive dining experiences. At Clouds, a European-style café overlooking Iowa State’s campus, romance is taking shape through 4-course themed dinners and Galentine-inspired afternoon high tea. Clouds is redefining how central Iowa celebrates love.
For many couples, Valentine’s Day follows a familiar pattern. Reservations are made late, favorite restaurants are fully booked, and diners end up waiting at the door or squeezing into a wobbly table near the restroom. The pressure of one night, one table, and one chance often turns what should be romantic into something rushed.
Clouds is offering an alternative by stretching the celebration beyond February 14 and replacing uncertainty with intention. This year, Clouds is hosting a four-course Valentine’s Dinner on February 12, 13, 14, and 15, allowing guests to choose the date that works best for them—even if the 14th sells out. Tickets are purchased in advance, eliminating wait times and surprise menus.
The four-course dinner is designed as a full experience rather than a quick meal. Guests begin with house-made strawberry tomato bruschetta, followed by a blueberry parmesan salad with raspberry dressing. The main course features penne pomodoro with cheese, finished with a romantic chocolate dessert. Set high above Ames, the evening leans into the idea of slowing down, sharing food, and enjoying a moment that feels planned rather than improvised.
Valentine’s week at Clouds also extends beyond couples. On February 15, Clouds will host a Galentine’s Afternoon High Tea, celebrating friendship alongside romance. The event features unlimited tea and a two-tiered platter filled with pink-hued treats, warm scones with jam and cream, savory tea sandwiches, and delicate pastries, an experience meant for sharing, conversation, and connection.
For families or guests looking for a lighter, playful way to celebrate, Clouds is also offering a Barbie-themed breakfast. With its bright pink aesthetic and welcoming atmosphere, the event allows guests to include children in the celebration or simply enjoy a fun, festive start to the day.
By offering multiple dates and clearly defined experiences, Clouds is rethinking what Valentine’s dining can look like. Instead of scrambling for a table at the last minute, guests can plan ahead, know exactly what they’re getting, and focus on what the holiday is meant to be about—connection, celebration, and enjoying the moment together.
